About Edward Marsden

During the 1920s the company flourished and became the main printing ink provider for the Metal Box Company.

Throughout the Second World War business remained buoyant as the company managed to secure government work and although Hull was badly bombed, the factory was fortunately not hit.

One of the main challenges during this period was to overcome the shortage of raw materials, particularly linseed oil. This combined with the company  losing many key members to the armed forces meant that Edward Marsdens had its fair share of challenges throughout the war years.

In 1950 Edward Marsdens posted record profits and progressed into the liquid printing ink market. In 1962 an additional storey was added to the original factory enabling the expansion of the tin printing ink department. With the introduction of UV curing inks for paper, board and vinyl to the company’s portfolio, Edward Marsden subsequently increased their export trade to supply customers in Greece, Spain and the Far East.

There was more success in 1971 and the  factory increased in size again by a further one third. Then after a merger with Arthur Holden & Sons Ltd, a new purpose built factory was purchased on Sutton Fields Industrial Estate in Hull. During the 1980’s Edward Marsden Ltd became one of 14 associates which formed the ICI World Packaging Group.

In 2007 Leeds based European Printing Inks purchased Edward Marsden Inks from ICI, with the aim of expanding the company and ensuring it prospers in the first two decades of the new millennium and beyond.

By combining the two companies experience, contacts and expertise, quality Edward Marsden UV printing inks are still being manufactured at EPI’s factory in Leeds today.

When the Edward Marsden trade mark became available in 2017, it was decided to rename the company Edward Marsden Ltd from 1st February 2018.
